AFTER SURGERY CARE

These instructions refer to complex tooth extractions, removal of residual tooth root, placing an implant, performing sinus lift intervention or tooth cyst removal.

To avoid any trouble or complications it is necessary to follow these rules.

Rinsing: Today do not rinse your mouth. You have to brush your teeth as usual. After the extraction, if you do not notice any signs of bleeding, rinse with the mixture of water and salt (one teaspoon of salt in one liter of water) every four hours or with sage tea.

Bleeding: Slight bleeding is normal and can be expected for two or three days after the intervention. If excessive bleeding starts ask your doctor for  advice. If you are unable to visit your doctor you can apply gauze pads. Bite the gauze pads for additional 30 minutes. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, you can do this more than once or ask your doctor for advice.

Swelling: Post operation swelling is not unusual and there is nothing to be afraid of. To prevent the swelling during the first twelve hours following the intervention you can apply cold packs  to the outside of your face every 15 to 30 minutes. You can use ice bags or ice wrapped in a plastic bag, glove or cloth.

Pain management: If you should experience any pain, you can take 1-2 pain killers every 4-6 hours. You can use your usual pain killers (Caffetin, Plivadon, Voltaren rapid). Do not use any pills containing Acetylsalicylic acid (Andol, Aspirin) because they can cause excessive bleeding.

Diet: You can eat normally. You should have soft and/or liquid foods on the day of surgery and the following day. Avoid warm and soft drinks; avoid hard and crunchy foods because they may disturb the extraction site.

Smoking and alcohol: You shouldn’t smoke for at least three to four hours following the extractions and while there is any bleeding. Avoid drinking alcohol.

Medicines: Take your antibiotics and medicines regularly if they were prescribed by your doctor prior the intervention.
