Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diseases of the periodontium, that is hard and soft tissues that support your teeth. When it comes to gum diseases it is important to stick to a control schedule because that is the only way to catch the first signs of the disease and to keep it under control.
After diagnosing the disease therapy can include procedures such as: calculus cleaning, cleaning and smoothing the tooth root. If the disease has advanced and there are periodontal pockets, they need to be cleaned by using microsurgical technique – curretage. Curretage includes scaling and root planing, cleaning the periodontal pockets but also removing inflammated soft tissue. After the therapy, often antibiotics are prescribed in order to eliminate all the bacteria. The procedure is performed in the local anesthesia.
Deep periodontal pockets require the next step in therapy, that is surgical removal of changed tissue. In some cases it is necessary to form the ridge and reduce the periodontal pocket. With a collaborative patient that maintains an excellent oral hygiene and with regular controls, this disease can be held under control.
Besides that, periodontics also deals with the esthetics of your gums. First of all, we think of gum recession and the so called Gummy smile.
Gum recession, that is pulling away of the gum tissue, can’t be considered a disease and for sure within a certain period of time it can cause various problems. It is necessary to deal with such changes on time.
Gum recession can be caused by a number of factors, such as tooth morphology, inadequate oral hygiene and the functional overload; also your age is to be taken into consideration. The characteristic of this change is pulling away of the gum margin without any signs of inflammation. Therefore, the tooth neck remains exposed and this can cause sensitivity. Due to these symptoms (recession and the exposed neck) you are more likely to suffer because of the exposure to bacteria and you are more likely to form caries of the tooth neck or suffer inflamed gums. Patients perceive recession more as an esthetic issue, especially if we are talking about the front teeth.
Smile that reveals visible gums is called gummy smile and it is not uncommon among patients. These people avoid laughing, or they cover their mouth. That directly affects one’s self-esteem. Correction of “gummy smile” includes dental crown lengthening procedure, so the gummy smile is significantly reduced. Optically we make front and lateral teeth appear longer and that makes your smile prettier. After this painless, short and effective treatment, patients leave the studio with a completely new smile; the results are visible immediately.
